Watson must step up for Aussies: Bailey

Powerful opener Shane Watson shapes as the key man to rescue Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign in the absence of injured captain Michael Clarke.

Watson scored two big hundreds in the semi-final and final of the 2009 Champions Trophy and has a proven track-record in tournament action.

The 31-year-old endured a rocky time the last time he was in an Australian dressing room, during March’s failed Test tour of India, but indications are he’s back on track.

Watson is fresh from a ton in the warm-up game against West Indies and was player of the tournament at the recent IPL.

With Clarke in severe doubt for the remainder of the Champions Trophy, stand-in skipper George Bailey said Watson needed to lead the way, starting with Australia’s date with England in Birmingham on Saturday.

“Watto’s experience becomes really important for us,” said Bailey.

“It looks like (he’s primed). His hundred against the West Indies was phenomenal.

“It’s great to see him bowling again which is really, really important for this side.

“But particularly batting at the top of the order – if he can set up a platform he can create so many opportunities for everyone else down the order.

“He’s such a great batsman to bat with. He’s always ticking the scoring over.

“There’s no doubt other sides would be fearing him and what he can do.”
