WA’s Davis cracks century against NSW

West Australian opener Liam Davis brought up his century early on day two of the Sheffield Shield game against NSW at the WACA Ground as the home side took a commanding lead into the luncheon break.

Davis (131 not out) and Adam Voges (78 not out) dominated an insipid NSW attack in the first session with WA 2-257 at lunch – 166 runs ahead of the visiting team’s first innings total of 91.

Starting the day at 2-158, the WA duo started slowly.

The first nine overs of the day were maidens with the NSW attack bowling plenty of balls wide outside off stump, giving Davis and Voges plenty of time to settle in on the placid pitch.

Looking short of a run, Shane Watson bowled four maidens.

Voges added just six runs to his tally in the first hour, while Davis hit the first boundary of the day after 28 minutes.

That seemed to spark him into life.

He hit three fours off a Trent Copeland over just before drinks, including a pull shot to bring up his century off 212 balls.

Voges brought up his 50 off 118 balls and began to put his foot down in the second hour.

WA captain Marcus North remains in hospital after having surgery on his injured right little finger last night.

A WA cricket spokesman said he was in good spirits, but it was too early to say how long the injury would keep him sidelined.
