Warriors captain Adam Voges is optimistic about the future of West Australian cricket despite Sunday’s disappointing loss to Queensland that cost the side a place in the Sheffield Shield final.
The Warriors were on their way to hosting their first final in 14 years after dominant performances on Friday and Saturday at the WACA ground but had to settle for bottom of the table after falling 120 runs short.
Voges will look for improvement in the off-season under coach Justin Langer in what will be his first season in the top job.
“There are some real positives to come out of the back end of this season,” said the Skipper.
“I think once this disappointment softens we will be able to appreciate our really good young kids coming through and that’s obviously very exciting for WA cricket.
“There are some areas we can improve on and I’m sure Justin (Langer) will look at that in the off-season.”
Youngster Sam Whiteman (27) and veteran Mike Hussey combined for WA’s best partnership of the second innings with 57.
Whiteman found the boundary on four occasions, one of which involved him rocking onto his back foot and cutting away just short of a six.
Losing early wickets in the second innings cost the Warriors after fighting well to control the game.
“We needed another solid days cricket. I thought we played really well for two days to get ourselves into the position,” Voges said.
“When we got Burns early this morning and we were probably controlling the game at that stage.
“Queensland had a lot of momentum going into their bowling innings and we lost early wickets and never really recovered.”
Tasmania will host Queensland for the final of the Sheffield Shield on Friday.
