Warriors boosted by Shaun Marsh return

Western Australia coach Justin Langer is confident Shaun Marsh will overcome the disappointment of missing out on a Test recall by inflicting more pain on Victoria’s bowlers this week.

Marsh was all set to play in the series-opening Test against India at Adelaide Oval, but he was released from the Australian squad on Monday after skipper Michael Clarke passed a number of fitness tests on his injured hamstring.

With Clarke now a certain starter against India, Marsh will fly back to Perth on Monday night before linking up with his Warriors teammates for the Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at the WACA Ground, starting Tuesday.

Marsh scored an unbeaten 134 against Victoria a fortnight ago before the match was abandoned in respect for Phil Hughes, who died two days after being struck on the head with a bouncer.

WA sit on top of the Shield table, but Victoria are nipping on their heels in second spot.

Langer is confident Marsh’s mindset will remain strong despite being overlooked for a Test recall.

“Michael Clarke is the best player in the world and a very determined customer. So Shaun understands that,” Langer said on Monday.

“(Shaun) has had great preparation for the Test match, so he’ll be dying to play this game against Victoria.

“He loves batting and he’s batting so well.

“He’ll really be looking forward to playing back here against the WACA against the same guys who he made 130 against.”

Langer was particularly close to Hughes, and said the death of his good friend had been hard to take.

“It’s impossible to put into words how sad it is when someone you admire and respect so much passes away, especially in those circumstances,” a heartfelt Langer said.

“It’s been a horrible week, but we’ve got great memories of Hughesy, and particularly the way he played the game.

“If all our guys can take his attitude – and if every young Australian player can take his attitude into their cricket – we’ll produce a lot of champions and have a lot of champion teams.

“We’re determined and committed to showing him respect and showing the game respect and getting back out there and playing as hard as we possibly can.

“That’s how Hughesy would want us to play, so that’s what we’re determined and committed to do.”
