David Warner exploded for NSW in the domestic one-day competition, but he has failed to make an impact in the Sheffield Shield opener against Tasmania.
Warner was out for 15 in the second innings, trapped lbw by impressive youngster Sam Rainbird on day three at Blacktown to leave NSW 1-34 at lunch.
Despite the loss of their star opener, the Blues are in a strong position, leading by 83 runs after earlier rolling Tasmania for 239.
Warner made three hundreds for NSW in a stellar one-day tournament effort last month, but he’s struggled in his first outing of the summer facing the red ball, also falling cheaply (21) in the first innings.
The Australian run-scorer wasn’t happy with his lbw decision on Friday, looking back several times and grabbing at his bat angrily several times during his walk from the field.
Conditions are making run-scoring difficult, but NSW opener Nic Maddinson has been patient to be 10 not out from 53 balls, accompanied by Scott Henry (8no).
The Tigers’ tail wagged when they resumed on day three, thanks to some big hitting from Luke Butterworth (49 from 76) and solid support from No.11 Rainbird (16 not out).
Rainbird also starred with the ball in the first innings, taking six wickets in just his second career first-class match.
Tasmania were eventually bowled out 49 runs short of the Blues’ first innings total of 288, but importantly the visitors added 44 runs to their overnight score for the final wicket.
Nathan Lyon finally ended the innings for NSW when the Australian spinner had Butterworth caught and bowled in the 98th over.
NSW fast bowler Doug Bollinger was the star for the home side, finishing with figures of 6-62 after a stellar performance on day two.
The left-armer can bring himself back into Test contention with a strong start to the season, given Australia’s fast-bowling injury dramas.
The wicket is tipped to deteriorate in the final two days, meaning Tasmania will need to restrict NSW in the second innings to prevent a big chase on the final day.
