Warner set to shine in Ashes says Clarke

Michael Clarke says David Warner is poised to enjoy a breakthrough Ashes series after starring in Australia’s domestic summer so far.

Warner followed up his three hundreds in the one-day domestic tournament with 104 off just 88 balls for NSW against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield last week to cement his place at the top of the Australian order alongside Chris Rogers for the first Test starting in 10 days in Brisbane.

The swashbuckling opener is among the runs, rather than in the headlines, where he found himself before the series in England and Australian captain Clarke says he hasn’t seen Warner in better shape.

“Davey is going great,” Clarke said at the launch of his Ashes Diary at the SCG on Monday.

“He is as fit and as strong as I have seen him. He is in a great place on and off the field.

“And what more can he do? He has scored four hundreds. You can’t push any harder for selection as a batsman than scoring four hundreds in a month. I don’t know what the Test XI is but I think Davey has done everything in his power to be at the front of the selectors’ minds.”

Away from cricket, Warner has credited his new relationship with ironwoman Candice Falzon for helping him get his game together on the field. He has also quit Twitter, which had caused him some trouble in the past, in a sign he is knuckling down ahead of the biggest series of his life.

The Australian team for the first Test at the Gabba will be named on Tuesday and Clarke, no longer a selector, is backing Warner to have a big summer, if – or rather when – his name is read out.

“He will find out tomorrow if he is going to get another opportunity and, if he does, I’m confident he is going to have a great summer,” Clarke said.
