Melbourne Stars captain Shane Warne and Melbourne Renegades allrounder Marlon Samuels have both been served with multiple code of conduct charges over their altercation in Sunday night’s fiery Big Bash League derby.
Warne marched to Samuels at the end of one of his overs, tugged at the West Indian’s shirt, then swore at him and pointed angrily, seemingly remonstrating over an earlier incident when David Hussey was batting.
Next over a Warne throw struck Samuels on the body.
Samuels responded by hurling his bat down the pitch, with the umpires having to step in to restore calm.
Cricket Australia announced seven charges on Monday, with Stars allrounder Cameron White also charged for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.
Warne has been charged with showing “serious dissent” at an umpire’s decision, engaging in “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact”, and throwing the ball at or near Samuels in an “inappropriate and/or dangerous manner”.
CA has also charged the legspinning great for “using language that is obscene, offensive or of a generally insulting nature to another player, official or spectator”.
Samuels has been asked to explain his “unbecoming behaviour” after hurling his bat and is also charged with making “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact”.
The date for the hearings is yet to be announced but the Stars are due to play again on Tuesday night when they face the winless Sydney Thunder.
