Wade stars with ton in 3rd Test v Windies

Australia’s Matthew Wade has taken centre-stage with a maiden Test century in the third match against the West Indies in Dominica.

Wade, dropped on 22 by Kemar Roach early in Tuesday’s action at Windsor Park, scored 106 in just his third Test as Australia posted a competitive 328 in their first innings.

At tea on day two, the West Indies were 3-75 in reply after Nathan Lyon (1-17) and David Warner (1-10) both struck before the break to remove Adrian Barath (29) and Darren Bravo (10).

Ben Hilfenhaus (1-9) has the other wicket, having dismissed young opener Kraigg Brathwaite in the second over for a duck.

Wade, 24, becomes the youngest Australian wicketkeeper to score a Test hundred, eclipsing selector Rod Marsh’s effort as a 25-year-old in 1972.

He added a vital 159 runs for the eighth and ninth wickets with Mitchell Starc (35) and Hilfenhaus (19) to boost Australia’s total from 7-169 on day one.

The wicketkeeper-batsman raced to his hundred, taking just 32 deliveries to go from 50 to three-figures, reaching the milestone with the 10th boundary of an innings that also included three sixes.

Wade was eventually dismissed by Windies spinner Shane Shillingford as the Windies spinner picked up the first five-wicket haul of his Test career when Bravo cleverly threw the ball in the air as he crossed the boundary rope before re-entering the field of play to complete the catch.

Shillingford then wrapped up the innings with the wicket of Hilfenhaus to finish with career-best figures of 6-119.

Bravo’s effort was the second sharp piece of fielding on an otherwise poor morning for the Windies with Starc run out after he was too casual getting back to his crease.

Chasing a third run, Starc didn’t appear aware that fielder Kraigg Brathwaite had launched the ball to his end and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh quickly broke the stumps as the Australian failed to ground his bat and was caught short.
