WA well placed v Qld for Shield final

Western Australia have the chance to host their first Sheffield Shield final in 15 years after yet another dominant batting performance from Mike Hussey on Saturday in Perth.

The last time WA hosted a Shield final at the WACA current coach Justin Langer was playing – back in 1998.

Hussey continued Friday’s form and was the last man dismissed in the first innings for 96, leaving the Warriors all out for a respectable 228 in reply to Queensland’s 164.

The 37-year-old was left on 48 not out at stumps on day two and was in red-hot form early on day three.

Hussey looked almost certain to reach a ton, finding the boundary 14 times. The highlight was a huge six over mid-wicket to move into the 90s but all came to a close when he was caught by Queensland’s Joe Burns just four runs shy of a century.

It wasn’t a good day entirely for WA’s batsmen, losing key wickets early with Ryan Harris and captain James Hopes in fine form with the ball.

Harris claimed Sam Whiteman as the first wicket of the day sending him back to the shed with 11 after a spectacular catch by Chris Hartley.

The pace bowler also sent WA teenager Ashton Agar walking (16) with help from a diving catch by Hopes and later ended Hussey’s century bid.

Minutes from lunch, the stumps were spread by a lightning quick ball from Ryan Duffield and Luke Pomersbach was clean bowled for a duck.

Heading into the first interval, the Bulls were 1-10.

Back from the break, Greg Moller was caught after a superb catch from Hussey off Hogan. Peter Forrest was next to walk after being caught behind off Burt Cockley.

Queensland were 3-81 at tea, 17 in front with four sessions to play.
