WA collapse against Tasmania in Shield

Western Australia have slumped to be all out for 258 late on day one of the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at Bellerive.

Seemingly cruising at 2-172 after they were sent in, the Warriors lost 8-86, with only Cameron Bancroft (93) and Adam Voges (59) amongst the runs.

WA emerged from tea at 3-176 but were 5-202 when Andrew Fekete (2-44) removed Mitch Marsh (4) and Xavier Doherty had Bancroft caught at midwicket.

Tigers allrounder Evan Gulbis (3-44) struck twice with the old ball before Luke Butterworth (3-46) mopped up the tail.

Tasmanian captain Tim Paine celebrated his 29th birthday with five catches, including a 30-metre dash and dive to remove Sam Whiteman (24).

Voges looked in superb touch following up an unbeaten 235 against Queensland, sweetly timing nine fours before he became one of Paine’s victims off Fekete at 3-172, a decision the batsman looked unimpressed with.

Bancroft fell short of his first Shield ton after anchoring the innings when he rashly tried to hit Doherty over the top and was caught by Ben Dunk at 5-202.

In grey and blustery Hobart conditions, the Warriors had weathered some good early bowling to be 0-58 when opener Luke Towers (28) fell lbw to Sam Rainbird (1-60).

A run later the Tigers had the prized scalp of former Test batsman Shaun Marsh (1), caught in the slips off Gulbis.

Voges and Bancroft put on 113 for the third wicket before the Warriors’ collapse.
