WA bowlers on top of SA early in Shield

Western Australian spinner Ashton Agar claimed a wicket as South Australia’s batsmen struggled in Thursday’s opening session of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The Redbacks, after winning the toss and batting, were 3-68 at lunch on day one.

Agar, who was recently taken to India as a net bowler for Australia’s Test squad, joined pace duo Nathan Coulter-Nile and Michael Hogan in taking wickets.

Coulter-Nile (1-21) struck first when SA opener Sam Raphael, on five, nicked a defensive attempt to first slip where Adam Voges comfortably took a waist-high catch.

Redback veteran Michael Klinger’s summer-long struggles soon continued when dismissed by Hogan (1-14) some 22 runs later.

The ex-captain launched into a slashed driving attempt to a wide ball but edged to second slip where Mike Hussey completed a sharp catch.

Klinger, a run machine in past seasons, has made just one half-century and averages just over 20 this Shield season.

Agar (1-13) then dismissed SA newcomer Alex Carey, who made a polished 31 in his second Shield game before missing an attempted sweep shot and being adjudged lbw.

SA strokeplayer Callum Ferguson (13 not out) and Travis Head (four not out) survived until the lunch break.
