Voges’ great form continues in Shield

West Australian skipper Adam Voges has continued his excellent Sheffield Shield form, notching a half century on day one of the clash with Tasmania at Bellerive.

Voges looked in sublime touch on Sunday, making 59 to follow the career-high 235 not out he made against Queensland in Perth.

The 34-year-old Australian one-day representative hit nine fours before he got a delivery that jumped on him from paceman Andrew Fekete (1-28), though Voges looked unimpressed with the caught-behind decision.

At tea, the Warriors were in a strong position at 3-176 in their first innings after they were sent in by Tasmanian captain Tim Paine under grey Hobart skies.

Opener Cameron Bancroft anchored the innings with an unbeaten 81, while Mitch Marsh was yet to open his account.

Voges picked up where he’d left off against the Bulls by off-driving his first ball for a boundary, and he is now averaging 84.4 for the Shield season.

He and Bancroft put on 113 for the third wicket before Paine’s catch sent Voges on his way at 3-172.

WA weathered some good early bowling from the Tigers and reached 0-58 until opener Luke Towers (28) was lbw to a swinging ball from Tasmanian left-armer Sam Rainbird (1-41).

A run later the Tigers had the prized scalp of former Test batsman Shaun Marsh (1), who nicked an Evan Gulbis (1-24) delivery to Mark Cosgrove at first slip.
