Voges, Davis batter NSW to put WA on top

Western Australia duo Liam Davis and Adam Voges have put together a record third-wicket partnership to all but ensure the Warriors an outright victory against NSW in the Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA Ground.

The pair batted throughout day two on Saturday to lift WA to 2-448 at stumps, a lead of 357 runs, with Davis unbeaten on a career-high 230 with Voges not out on 160.

NSW were rolled for just 91 on the opening day.

Both Davis and Voges were relentless on Saturday against a NSW attack boasting former Test players Trent Copeland and Steven Smith as well as Josh Lalor, Stephen O’Keefe and Timm van der Gugten, lifting their stand to a mammoth 343 runs after coming together before stumps on day one.

Test allrounder Shane Watson was used sparingly by the Blues and looked down on pace as he makes his return from a calf injury while former Test spinner Nathan Hauritz only bowled three overs on the day.

The bad day was compounded for NSW with Smith dropping Voges on 78 at second slip in the only chance offered by either batsman.

The Warriors, chasing a final berth, will be glad for the big lead with captain Marcus North out for the remainder of the match after undergoing surgery on an injured finger on Friday night.

A WA cricket spokesman said the former Test batsman was in good spirits but it was unknown how long the injury will keep him sidelined.
