Vincent lifts lid on spot-fixing: report

Former New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent is lifting the lid on widespread fixing in cricket to investigators, according to a British newspaper report.

The Daily Telegraph reported Vincent has agreed on a plea bargain with the International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption unit in which he provides information in the hope of avoiding a criminal prosecution for his involvement in, and knowledge of, spot-fixing from 2008-12.

Vincent, who was a travelling specialist Twenty20 batsman during that period, has reportedly provided a “treasure trove” of information about matches which were targeted for spot-fixing and the names of players who were involved.

He provided evidence about his experiences during competitions in England (Lancashire and Sussex), India (Chandigarh Lions), New Zealand (Auckland), Hong Kong (Sixes tournament) and South Africa (Mid West Rhinos).

Vincent revealed in December he would cooperate with detectives when his name emerged in connection with the investigation, along with former New Zealand and Chandigarh teammates Chris Cairns and Daryl Tuffey.

Several of his allegations reportedly involve matches played for Chandigarh in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League, where he said players were offered bribes.

The Telegraph said he had provided names and dates of meetings with fixers which were being cross-referenced by the ICC.

Vincent, 35, also reportedly told investigators of fixing when he played for the Auckland in New Zealand.

However, this belied a previous statement from New Zealand Cricket that no games there were under investigation.

Vincent was part of the Auckland side involved in the Champions League tournament in South Africa in October 2012.

The report said Vincent tried to persuade a Lancashire teammate to participate in a fix, but the player reported the approach to authorities.

Cairns has continually stated his innocence, voicing his frustration about the sullying of his reputation. Investigators contacted him for the first time in March.
