Victoria’s depth tested for Shield clash

Victoria’s depth will be tested for their Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at Adelaide Oval starting on Thursday.

The fourth-placed Bushrangers can boast four players — Aaron Finch, David Hussey, Clint McKay and Matthew Wade — in Australia’s 14-man squad for their two Twenty20 matches against India in Sydney and Melbourne this week.

And Test pacemen Peter Siddle (rested) and James Pattinson (foot injury) are also unavailable.

Peter Handscomb, Ryan Carters and 20-year-old former AFL prospect Alex Keath have been recalled to a 12-man squad named on Tuesday to play the last-placed Redbacks.

Meyrick Buchanan, 18, has been included but will be released to play in Friday’s Prime Minister’s XI match against Sri Lanka at Canberra’s Manuka Oval.

“Everybody is really looking forward to getting back into it,” Victoria coach Greg Shipperd said.

“It’s a great opportunity for some of our younger players.”

Shield cricket resumes this week after a break of almost two months because of the domestic Twenty20 competition.

Meanwhile, Victoria’s Second XI will host Sri Lanka for a one-day game at Junction Oval at 10am on Wednesday.

Victoria squad: Cameron White (capt), Scott Boland, Ryan Carters, Peter Handscomb, Jayde Herrick, Jon Holland, Alex Keath, Andrew McDonald, Rob Quiney, Chris Rogers, Will Sheridan, Meyrick Buchanan (likely 12th man).

Victoria Second XI squad: Michael Hill (capt), Meyrick Buchanan, Tom Donnell, Jonathan Fagg, Andrew Fekete, Steven Gilmour, Jake Hancock, Jeremy Hart, Dylan Knight, Clive Rose, Daniel Salpietro, Stephen Seymour.
