Vics take control of SA in Shield game

Wily medium-pacer Andrew McDonald rolled South Australia’s king pins as Victoria seized complete control of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The Redbacks wobbled to 9-215 at stumps on Friday’s second day, some 222 runs behind Victoria’s first innings total.

Victorian bowlers McDonald, Jon Holland, Scot Boland and Alex Keath all took two wickets.

But it was McDonald (2-39) who was instrumental in a damaging top order Redbacks collapse in which the home side lost 4-61 on a perfect Adelaide Oval batting strip.

SA’s slump started when opener Tom Stray (14) was needlessly run out in a mix-up with James Smith to end a promising 62-run opening partnership.

McDonald then claimed the prized scalps of Redbacks captain and run machine Michael Klinger (one) and strokeplayer Callum Ferguson (14) in the space of four overs.

The evergreen allrounder produced nipping off-cutters which both SA stars failed to counter – Klinger bowled through the gate attempting a drive, and Ferguson’s forward defence penetrated.

The aggressive Smith, who unleashed some powerful shots in moving to 76, was next to fall when trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Holland (2-41).

From 0-62, the Redbacks rapidly found themselves in dire trouble at 4-124 and Boland (2-39) and Keath (2-2) ensured they never recovered, despite Tom Cooper making 42.

Earlier, Victoria were bowled out 30 minutes before lunch after their tailend batsmen pushed their total to 437.

The Bushrangers compiled 151 runs with their last four wickets with the chief lower order contributor Jayde Herrick, who came in at number nine and struck an unbeaten 62 – his highest first-class score.

He combined with number eight Will Sheridan (49) for a 62-run partnership for the eighth wicket, before adding another 41 for the last wicket with Scot Boland (14).

Redbacks pacemen Peter George (3-85) and Jake Haberfield (3-117) were the most successful bowlers.
