Vics’ Sheridan slices through WA top order

Victoria paceman Will Sheridan claimed five wickets in 20 balls as the Bushrangers wrested control of the Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia.

In just 37 minutes, the Warriors went from 0-63 to 6-82 at lunch, on the back of Sheridan’s stunning spell of 5-10 at the WACA Ground.

Chasing 367 for outright victory on the final day, Western Australia started brightly with openers Liam Davis and Wes Robinson adding 63 for the first wicket.

Davis in particular looked set for a big score as he hit eight fours in his 45-ball innings to keep the Warriors above the required run-rate of more than four an over.

But the introduction of Sheridan, the 24-year-old left-arm paceman in just his seventh first-class match, changed the game.

After being hit for four, Sheridan struck back to remove Davis for 38, caught at second slip by Aaron Finch.

The next ball, he trapped Shaun Marsh lbw for a duck after the left-hander played down the wrong line and for the second time in the match a Victorian quick was on a hat-trick.

Adam Voges, facing a king pair after he was a Peter Siddle victim in the first innings, watched the hat-trick ball pass well wide of off-stump.

But he lasted just one more ball when he drove hard at the first delivery of Sheridan’s second over and keeper Ryan Carters accepted the simple catch.

At the other end, Robinson had begun to play with more freedom after a circumspect start but he could only watch as his team-mates crumbled.

Travis Birt was lbw for six before Sheridan was again on a hat-trick when he ripped through Craig Simmons’ defence and bowled him.

Luke Ronchi defended the hat-trick ball but the next over he holed out to Sheridan at deep square leg to give Glenn Maxwell his first wicket.

Earlier, Victoria declared at 8-390 in a match they must win to retain any chance of making the Shield final.
