Vics’ Quiney rues missed chance for ton

Victoria’s Rob Quiney says it’s time for teammate Cameron White to start turning superb batting form into centuries.

And the Bushrangers opener, who played Test cricket less than a year ago, says he’s kicking himself that he also missed a great chance for a hundred as Victoria dominated Western Australia at the MCG on Friday.

The home side declared their second innings at 8-338, with Quiney notching 89 and White an aggressive 61, to set WA an unlikely victory target of 381 in their Sheffield Shield match.

The Warriors were 0-13 at stumps with a day to play.

Quiney, whose score was his highest in a Shield game since he failed in two Tests against South Africa last November, fell trying to loft left-arm spinner Ashton Agar to long-on, instead mistiming the shot and chipping it straight to midwicket.

“I could have played that shot 20 runs later and got a hundred,” he said.

“In the scheme of things I don’t think it mattered too much to the overall day.

“But individually it’s one of those ones you kick yourself – it’s a statistic and something that if you’re going to push yourself higher that it makes a difference.”

White, who also batted beautifully for 83 in the first innings, hit three sixes in Friday’s innings as he fell chasing quick runs before the declaration.

His fine start to the Shield season comes after he was named the player of the series in the recent state one-day tournament.

But Quiney said White too needed to start posting triple figures soon.

“He’s made a lot of 50s and I’m hoping that he can cash in and get a couple of hundreds,” Quiney said.

“It becomes a bit of a habit, I guess.”

WA quicks Michael Hogan and Nathan Rimmington took three wickets each.

Warriors openers Marcus North and Cameron Bancroft then survived a fiery four-over spell from Test quick Peter Siddle to end the day, with Bancroft struck in the helmet.

“He’s priming himself obviously for the Ashes and we’re stoked to have him in our side,” Quiney said of Siddle.
