Victoria begins their domestic season in Perth with Friday’s one-day clash at the WACA Ground against a West Australian side already looking to hit back from a disappointing opening to their campaign.
WA lost both their one-day and Sheffield Shield clashes last week against New South Wales meaning that to make something out of starting the season with two home fixtures they will need to lift their performance against a strong Victorian side.
Five Bushrangers are away with Australia at the Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka but Victoria were still able to call on Test quicks Peter Siddle and James Pattinson as well the returning John Hastings and veterans Andrew McDonald, Darren Pattinson, Rob Quiney and Chris Rogers to take on the Warriors.
Bushrangers coach Greg Shipperd is excited by the squad in Perth especially the return of Hastings, who missed all of last season following shoulder surgery.
“John Hastings is arguably the biggest recruit in Australia so his return is a real bonus and it’s great to have Michael Hill back as well,” Shipperd said.
“We are looking forward to starting our back-to-back road trip in Perth and it’s going to be a real challenge with our international players away.
“It’s up to our young players to take their chances before those guys filter back.”
WA has selected the same squad that lost to NSW last week in both the one-day cup and the Sheffield Shield opener.
And captain Marcus North remains confident in a group including Test spinner Michael Beer, Mitchell Johnson and the Marsh brothers, Shaun and Mitch.
“It’s a kick in the backside, but the last thing I want for the guys is to get the confidence knocked out of them,” North said.
“It was just the first game. There’s no doubt we wanted to start the season really well, but I think we’ll be better for it – getting a run on the park for when Victoria come over for their first games.”
