Victorian openers Rob Quiney and Chris Rogers put on an unbeaten century stand to have their side 0-114 at lunch on day two of the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at Bellerive.
Quiney was 57no and Rogers 55 as the Bushrangers looked to chase down the home side’s first innings of 6(dec)-369, now a lead of 255.
The two former Test representatives were largely untroubled on a pitch that has belied its greenish appearance.
Quiney hit eight fours in his 93-ball knock and Rogers six boundaries and a six over fine leg off the bowling of Evan Gulbis (0-34) in a 99-ball stay.
Veteran Tigers seamer Luke Butterworth was the pick of the bowlers with a tidy 0-23 from 10 overs, while Ben Hilfenhaus bowled eight for figures of 0-29.
Needing an outright win to keep their final hopes alive, Tasmania declared on their overnight score before play on Friday.
Ricky Ponting top-scored with 104 on day one with Mark Cosgrove making 81 and Jonathan Wells an unbeaten 71.
Spinner Fawad Ahmed was the Bushrangers’ best bowler with 2-86.
First-innings points would all but ensure first-placed Victoria make the final, while an outright win would probably mean they host the decider.
