Vics down NSW in Sheffield Shield opener

Chris Tremain’s short-ball barrage and Marcus Stoinis’ lusty hitting fired Victoria to a nine-wicket victory over NSW in their season-opening Sheffield Shield clash.

NSW finished their second innings at 9-271 shortly after tea at the MCG on Monday, Ben Rohrer retired hurt and unable to return after a brutal Tremain bouncer struck his helmet.

Chasing 131 runs from 33 overs, Victoria started shakily when debutant David King was out for a duck in the first over.

But Rob Quiney (45no) and Stoinis (84no) were rarely ruffled in the unbeaten stand that followed, scoring freely and rapidly to seal the result in the 22nd over.

On a drop-in deck that offered little assistance to bowlers, Tremain (3-63 from 25 overs) worked tirelessly against his old side.

He made good use of the second new ball, removing Patrick Jackson and Josh Lalor with consecutive deliveries in Monday’s second session.

Gurinder Sandhu survived the hat-trick ball, ducking a bouncer that hurtled in to his back.

It was the same evasive action that Rohrer took against Tremain in the 73rd over, but with far more serious consequences.

Rohrer left the field sitting on the back of a motorised stretcher and was sent for precautionary scans after wearing one on the ear.

Tremain, who grew up in the tiny NSW town of Yeoval and switched states during the off-season, fired in another short delivery to dismiss Jackson.

Legspinner Fawad Ahmed, who turned the ball sharply all day, clean bowled Sandhu and Josh Hazlewood to finish with figures of 3-49 from 27 overs.

NSW resumed on 2-106 when Monday’s action started under clear skies.

A draw seemed to be the most likely result until Matthew Wade helped dismiss Kurtis Patterson and Scott Henry in the final two overs of the morning session.

Patterson was stumped off the bowling of Ahmed, while lunch was called when Tremain had Henry out edging.

David Hussey, Peter Handscomb and Dan Christian scored first-innings centuries to initially give Victoria control of the game, Wade declaring at 5-507 on day three.
