Tough Shield chase for Bulls in final

Tasmania recovered from a top order rout to ensure Queensland will face a tough fourth-innings run-chase in the Sheffield Shield final.

The Tigers were 6-131 in their second innings at tea on day four, a lead of 325, after Tim Paine (47no) and James Faulkner (39no) steadied a ship that looked to be sinking at 5-15.

The Bulls will now need to make the highest fourth-innings winning total in Shield final history to defend their title.

Victoria made 239 to win a final over NSW in Melbourne in 1990-91.

Tasmania’s seemingly impregnable position over the first three days was ambushed when former Test paceman Ryan Harris produced a miracle spell of 4-6 in 5.3 overs to have the home side reeling.

The Tigers lost 4-1 in 13 balls on what had been a docile pitch, leaving Paine and Faulkner to pick up the pieces with a partnership of 75.

Jordan Silk (1) and Mark Cosgrove (4) chopped on before Harris snared Ricky Ponting (1) lbw when the former Test captain offered no stroke to a ball that came back at him.

It was 4-6 when Harris bowled captain George Bailey for a duck and 5-15 when Jonathan Wells (1) let one go and had his stumps rattled.

Ponting’s innings could have been his last in Australia as he decides whether to play on with Tasmania in 2013-14.

Harris did his chances of a recall for the Ashes series no harm but was clearly exhausted after a massive workload as his return from shoulder surgery continued.

The 33-year-old, who has 47 Test wickets at 23.63 from his 12 matches, is in just his third first-class match of the season.

Earlier, the Bulls were all out for a first innings 225 after resuming at 7-185.

Medium pacer Evan Gulbis snared 4-62 and Faulkner 3-40.
