Tiny Warrior comes clean on true height

It’s the joke that has gone largely unnoticed – until now.

For the past few seasons, diminutive Warriors opener Liam Davis has been listed as being 175cm tall in a variety of official records.

But if you stand next to Davis, you will instantly realise the 175cm figure is a far stretch.

And after scoring a match-winning 93 in WA’s one-day triumph over Victoria on Friday, Davis finally came clean about his actual height, and the circumstances surrounding the current official listing.

“I’m 168cm,” Davis said with a cheeky laugh.

“The 175cm figure was from back in the day when I actually filled that in myself.

“This year I put 137cm, but they didn’t believe me, so they still think I’m 175cm.”

Whatever his height, there’s no doubting Davis’ ability.

Last summer, the 28-year-old announced himself as a potential future Test player by compiling 921 first-class runs, which included a memorable 303 not out in a crushing win over NSW.

Davis said it remained a dream of his to play for Australia, but his immediate focus was on scoring more big scores for WA.

“All I can do is keep scoring runs,” said Davis, who posted scores of 40, 62, 4, 43 and 24 in Australia A’s tour of the UK earlier this year.

“If an opportunity (to play for Australia) does arise, hopefully I’m in good enough form to grab it with both hands.”

WA skipper Marcus North said he was excited by how well Davis had developed his game over the past few years.

“He doesn’t get flustered by situations,” North said.

“He’s very mature and calculated out there and he’s got a very clear game plan that enables him to score runs consistently against good attacks.

“If he keeps scoring runs, he’s going to put pressure (on people in the Test side).

“You’ve got blokes like Ed Cowan, who’s the incumbent (Test opener) at the moment, but still got a bit of work to do to establish himself in that position.

“Liam’s certainly playing an international standard of cricket now.”

Davis will be aiming to continue his good form in WA’s Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at the WACA Ground, starting Sunday.
