Tech glitch blamed for Hussey scare

A mysterious technical gremlin has copped the blame for one of the most bizarre cricket scenes witnessed this summer – umpires chasing after “dismissed” batsman Mike Hussey to give him a reprieve.

Hussey launched a superb fightback for Australia against India with a counter-attacking 59 on Sunday but not before he’d been given his marching orders on one.

The veteran left-hander had faced just four balls when the Gabba’s computerised scoreboard flashed “OUT” after third umpire Bruce Oxenford was called on to review a stumping appeal.

A downtrodden Hussey trudged half-way to the boundary rope before on-field umpires Billy Bowden and Steve Davis rushed after him and reported he’d been an innocent victim of an equipment malfunction.

The correct but farcical recall didn’t impress fired-up India skipper MS Dhoni who remonstrated with the umpires and questioned the reprieve with Australia in trouble at 3-119.

The experienced Oxenford, a Brisbane local, later told Gabba officials he hit the right button but the wrong decision appeared on the big screen.

However, testing by technicians couldn’t replicate the mistake as confusion remained about the alleged glitch.
