Tasmania to pick Ponting for Cup final

He’s been dumped from the national one day team but Ricky Ponting has declared he will play for Tasmania in Saturday’s domestic one day final against South Australia.

Shortly after holding a press conference on Tuesday to confirm he will continue to play Test cricket, Ponting called Tigers coach Tim Coyle to confirm his availability for the Adelaide Oval fixture.

“It’s a huge boost for our chances,” Coyle told AAP.

“It’s great to have Ricky in the team and great for him to have the opportunity to win a national title with Tasmania.

“It’s something that’s not on his resume and I know he’s very determined having spoken to him today to make sure that’s the case.

“He’s excellent for the team, he’s excellent to have around and he’s very determined to do well.”

Ponting will be part of a powerful batting lineup, which will include skipper George Bailey and Test opener Ed Cowan, when the squad is named on Wednesday.

“He’ll strengthen our top order batting, which if there’s been one part of our game that’s been a little inconsistent, it’s been our batting,” Coyle said.
