Tasmania lead by 243 runs at MCG

Test great Ricky Ponting is unbeaten on 46 with Tasmania reaching 2-124 in their second innings at lunch on the final day of their Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at the MCG.

The visitors hold an overall advantage of 243 with eight wickets in hand and will be considering a declaration in the post-lunch session to set competition leaders Victoria a victory target.

Tasmania had resumed on 0-6 after bowling Victoria out for 320 in reply to the visitors’ 5-439.

The 37-year-old Ricky Ponting, after his brilliant 162 not out in the first innings, has hit six fours and one six from 90 balls in another sparking performance in the second dig.

Alex Doolan, who was chosen on Friday in the Australia A side to play South Africa next week at the SCG, is unbeaten on 35 including five boundaries.

Paceman James Pattinson (2-24) warmed up for the November 9 Gabba Test against South Africa by picking up two wickets in the first session for Victoria on Friday.

Mark Cosgrove was caught and bowled for 24 and Test opener Ed Cowan poked a catch to Andrew McDonald at short mid-on for 16.
