Tasmanian captain George Bailey has won the toss and sent South Australia in to bat on a green-tinged wicket for the Sheffield Shield clash at Bellerive.
The start of play has been delayed by three hours because of persistent drizzle in Hobart, where the temperature has barely reached 10C.
Test paceman Ben Hilfenhaus will have the opportunity to exploit the conditions as he lines up for his first long-form match since April ahead of Australia’s series against South Africa beginning next week.
Test squad members Ricky Ponting, Ed Cowan and Nathan Lyon will also have a final hit-out before the Gabba match.
Debutant Sam Raphael will open the South Australian innings.
Tasmania have named former Test spinner Jason Krejza as 12th man, with Joe Mennie to carry the drinks for the Redbacks.
Seventy-two overs have been scheduled for day one, although more showers are predicted.
