Tasmania crawl in Shield final

Tasmania crawled to 0-41 at lunch on day one of the Sheffield Shield final against Queensland at Bellerive.

Tigers openers Jordan Silk and Mark Cosgrove survived an accurate Bulls attack which found some early seam movement, scoring at a snail’s rate of 1.3 runs per over after the home side had won the toss.

At the break, Silk was unbeaten on 24 from 110 deliveries and Cosgrove 15 from 83.

Seventeen maidens were bowled in a session with just three boundaries, but which went the full two hours after showers earlier on Friday morning.

Queensland’s bowling figures reflected the slow going, with skipper James Hopes conceding just one run from his opening five-over spell and former Test paceman Ryan Harris 15 from his impressive nine.

The Tigers survived numerous lbw shouts but it was Bulls spinner Nathan Hauritz (0-9) who produced the only clear-cut chance.

Hauritz found Silk’s bat edge as the 20-year-old, coming off his first Shield century in the final round win over Victoria, attempted to cut when he was four but the catch was grassed by Harris at slip.

Silk then survived a nasty knock on the elbow from Harris late in the session, receiving treatment but batting on.

The Tigers named an unchanged eleven from the one that beat Victoria by 111 runs, while Ronan McDonald was named 12th man for the Bulls.

Tasmania are aiming to win their third Shield title and first with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting.

The Bulls are fighting to defend their title and win the Shield for the eighth time.
