Tasmania will be aiming to bat Western Australia out of the Sheffield Shield match at the WACA Ground after easily banking first-innings points on Friday.
The Tigers took a 114-run first-innings lead after bowling out WA for 97 before lunch on the second day in Perth before moving to 2-29 at the break to boast a lead of 143 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand.
Tasmania lost both openers cheaply to be 2-10 with Ben Dunk trapped lbw by Ryan Duffield for eight and Mark Cosgrove caught at slip by Michael Hussey off Burt Cockley for one.
Ricky Ponting is not out 16 and Alex Doolan unbeaten on two when lunch was called.
Tasmania are well on top despite falling to 8-138 on the opening day but the Tigers’ tailenders did well to scrape to 211 and then make early inroads with the ball.
They had WA in desperate trouble at 6-54 at stumps on the first day and then allowed the Warriors to add just 4-43 on Friday morning to bowl them all out for under one hundred.
Both sides came into the Shield contest with the knowledge they needed to win to stay alive in the race to next month’s final that looks likely to be played at the MCG against Victoria.
Allrounder Luke Butterworth continued his love affair with bowling at the WACA claiming 5-35 for Tasmania, the eighth five-wicket haul of his 58-match first-class career.
But all of Tasmania’s seamers bowled well with Adam Maher claiming 2-16, Ben Hilfenhaus 2-27 and James Faulkner 1-16. Offspinner Jason Krejza wasn’t even required to send down a ball but has already made a big contribution in the game with his first-innings score of 36.
No WA batsman made any sort of impression in an innings devoid of any fighting spirit that coach Justin Langer must be furious about.
Sam Whiteman top-scored with 19 with John Rogers (14), Ashton Agar (13) and Mitch Marsh (10) the only other players in double figures.
