Tasmania 1-72 against SA in Shield

South African Johan Botha took his first wicket as South Australian captain in the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at Adelaide Ovalon Tuesday.

The Tigers, after winning the toss, were 1-72 at lunch on the opening day with opener Mark Cosgrove not out 34 and Alex Doolan on three.

Botha, leading the Redbacks for the first time, achieved SA’s sole breakthrough by dismissing Test opener Ed Cowan for 35.

Cowan prodded forward defensively but the Botha delivery struck him on the pads, and he was given out lbw to end a 66-run opening partnership.

Botha was playing his first game for SA, having missed their season-opening Shield loss to Queensland last week due to his international duties with South Africa’s Twenty20 World Cup outfit.

The Redbacks took the field without former skipper Michael Klinger, who failed a fitness test on a shoulder injured while fielding in grade cricket last weekend.
