The heroics of Alister McDermott will be hard to beat – but Tasmanian allrounder Luke Butterworth did his darnedest to have Queensland in trouble in the Sheffield Shield final at the Gabba on Saturday.
At lunch on day two, the Bulls are 2-9 after Butterworth exploited overcast conditions to produce figures of 2-0 off four overs.
He still has some way to go before besting McDermott, who helped bowl Tasmania out for 241.
Resuming at 6-208, the Tigers could only manage another 33 runs on a gloomy morning as McDermott (6-54) and Steve Magoffin (2-31) went through the tail.
McDermott – aged just 20 – now has the equal ninth best bowling figures in a Sheffield Shield final.
And he is just the sixth Queenslander to grab a six-wicket haul in a Shield decider.
He already has bragging rights over his famous dad Craig.
McDermott has surpassed his dad’s wicket tally in Shield finals.
His father could only muster 4-371 at 92.75 after featuring in the 1983-84, 1987-88 and 1989-90 deciders for Queensland.
The young McDermott’s six-wicket haul included the prized scalp of Tasmanian captain Ricky Ponting for one and Tigers top scorer Steven Cazzulino (68).
Magoffin was in doubt to play on the second day after suffering back spasms on Friday.
However, he opened the bowling on Saturday with the desperately unlucky Ryan Harris (0-71 off 30 overs) and struck with his second ball of the day.
Butterworth – who hit 25 precious runs for Tasmania – did not waste time ripping into the Bulls with the ball.
With the last ball of his first over, and Queensland’s second overall, he had Alex Kemp caught behind for a duck and the Bulls reeling at 1-0.
The lanky Butterworth then enticed a knick from opener Wade Townsend (five) and the Bulls were suddenly 2-5.
