Tas allrounder Cutting under injury cloud

Australian Twenty20 squad member Ben Cutting will be monitored by Queensland medical staff after suffering hamstring soreness in the evenly poised Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania.

Cutting left the ground at Bellerive when his hamstring tightened after bagging a fourth wicket, rendering him unable to finish his 26th over.

A Bulls spokesman said the move was precautionary and medical staff would check on his condition on Saturday morning.

The 27-year-old played in the recent 3-0 T20 sweep of England at home and was named in the squad to take on South Africa in three games from March 9.

He grabbed 4-54 as Queensland dismissed the Tigers for a first innings total of 350.

At stumps on day two, the Bulls were 3-136 in reply, 214 in arrears.

In-form young gun Joe Burns held the key to their fortunes, unbeaten on 76, while Peter Forrest was 18.

Burns played superbly on a slow track, smacking seven boundaries in a chanceless knock.

The highly rated 24-year-old has made a century and five 50s in six Shield games this season to average 55.

Tigers pacemen Ben Hilfenhaus (1-42), Sam Rainbird (1-38) and Andrew Fekete (1-31) had a wicket each to have their side in the driving seat in a match both sides need to win to stay in touch with the ladder leaders.

Queensland were 1-30 Luke Pomersbach (12) was caught behind off Rainbird.

Burns and Dom Michael put on 50 before Michael was lbw to Fekete at 2-80.

Nick Stevens was bowled by Hilfenhaus at 3-96 and Forrest got a life when he was dropped on 0.

Earlier, Tasmania’s tail had wagged after they resumed at 5-244 and lurched to 7-267, led by gloveman Tim Paine (39).

Alister McDermott bagged 3-58 and Luke Feldman 2-69 for the Bulls.
