Sutherland says key is to reward stars

Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland hopes the new deal with the players’ union makes the Aussies the best-paid players in the world.

Sutherland and Australian Cricketers’ Association boss Paul Marsh on Friday signed a five-year deal after what Marsh described as a challenging negotiation.

The deal yielded a Player Payments Pool of between 24.5 and 27 per cent of revenue, as opposed to the previous model of a fixed 26 per cent.

But Marsh said Aplayers would need to win every game and top the ICC rankings to pick up 27 per cent.

Asked if Australia’s players were the best-paid and best-looked after in world cricket, Sutherland said he’d like to think so.

“We want cricket to be a sport of choice for high-potential young athletes in Australia,” Sutherland said.

“We are very focused on ensuring that the rewards for Australian players representing their country continue to be very strong, both relative to other countries but also relative to other sports.”
