Stars lament Ponting’s ODI demise

Former Test stars Matthew Hayden and Darren Lehmann have both expressed their disappointment at the end of Ricky Ponting’s glittering one-day international career.

Ponting said he doesn’t expect to add to his 375 one-day games for Australia after being dropped from the national squad on Monday.

The former captain said he accepted the selectors’ decision, which came after he made five single-figure scores in a row in the tri-series against India and Sri Lanka.

But ex-opener Hayden said the decision was one he couldn’t agree with, going on social network website Twitter to express his disappointment.

“Ricky Pontings Omission from the National 1 Day side is an outrage!,” Hayden tweeted on Tuesday.

“I remain speechless!”

The burly Queenslander wasn’t the only one of Ponting’s former team-mates to express surprise at dumping, with Lehmann suggesting the 37-year-old should at least have been given the chance to say farewell in Friday’s one-dayer against Sri Lanka in Hobart.

“Ricky Ponting is an absolute champion, and should have played in Hobart this weekend in front of his home crowd,” Lehmann tweeted.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said despite the inglorious end to Ponting’s ODI career, he would be remembered as possibly the nation’s best limited overs player the nation has had.

“I think his career is incomparable in one-day cricket,” Sutherland told reporters in Sydney.

“Five World Cups, four finals, three championships and two as captain, plus all the runs and special feats in the field.

“I just can’t think of a player that has made a greater contribution and been a better one-day cricketer, particularly in the big moments.”
