Sri Lanka set India 237 runs to win ODI

Emerging batsman Dinesh Chandimal top-scored with 81 as Sri Lanka set India 237 runs to win Tuesday’s one-day international at Adelaide Oval.

The Lankans made 9-236 from 50 overs, with Chandimal supported by captain Mahela Jayawardene (43) and Kumar Sangakkara (31).

Indian paceman Vinay Kumar claimed 3-45 and spinner Ravi Ashwin took 2-30 from a miserly 10 overs.

Chandimal and Jayawardene featured in a 94-run partnership which steadied Sri Lanka after a sluggish start returned 3-79 in the 20th over.

But Chandimal and Jayawardene both fell within seven balls to rob the Lankans of momentum.

Jayawardene, who made his 43 from 49 balls, was trapped lbw by Kumar.

And Chandimal, whose classy knock followed returns of 37 and 64 in Sri Lanka’s opening two games, perished in the next over.

The 22-year-old was run out when team-mate Angelo Mathews attempted to pinch a single to Rohit Sharma at cover, ending his 91-ball innings which featured six fours and a six.

The dismissals of the key batsmen were compounded when Thisara Perera (five) was out two overs later, with Sri Lanka losing 3-11 in a costly period.

The mini-collapse left Mathews (17) in charge of any late rally, but he was run out in the 47th over – missing a drive, he inexplicably drifted down the pitch as wicketkeeper MS Dhoni threw down the stumps.

India, with two wins from three matches, recalled star batsman Sachin Tendulkar but rested Virender Sehwag and paceman Zaheer Khan for the encounter with the Lankans, who are winless in the tri-series also involving Australia.
