Sri Lanka names Mathews T20 captain

Allrounder Angelo Mathews on Thursday was announced as Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 captain and fast bowler Lasith Malinga as his deputy for one year starting with the one-off match against New Zealand in Pallekele on Tuesday.

The appointments follow the resignation of Mahela Jayawardene as captain after the hosts’ World Twenty20 final defeat to the West Indies this month.

Malinga, however, has been rested for the New Zealand match and seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekara will stand in for him.

Jayawardene has also been left out of the game, and replaced by one-day international opener Upul Tharanga, who was not part of the World T20 squad.

Offspinner Sachithra Senanayake takes the place of Ajantha Mendis, who was nursing a side strain. Mendis was the highest wicket-taker in the World T20, with 15 in six matches.

New Zealand also play five one-day internationals and two Tests on their tour.

Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (capt), Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilshan Munaweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Dinesh Chandimal, Jeevan Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Shaminda Eranga, Akila Dananjaya, Sachithra Senanayake, Upul Tharanga.
