Sri Lanka hit 4-161 against Aust

Sri Lanka belted 20 runs from their final over to post a total of 4-161 in Monday’s second Twenty20 match against Australia at the MCG.

Mahela Jayawardene came to the crease at 2-33 and paced the innings nicely with an unbeaten 61 from 45 deliveries including five fours and two sixes.

Opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, sporting tape over a bruised right eye after being struck by a bouncer from Ben Laughlin in Saturday’s game one, scored only six before he dragged a short ball from James Faulkner onto his stumps.

The pull shot also caused the demise of Dinesh Chandimal who was caught at mid-off from Laughlin’s bowling for five.

The tourists slumped to 3-39 when George Bailey held a difficult catch at cover to remove Kusal Perera (15) in the following over, bowled by spinner Glenn Maxwell.

Jayawardene and Jeevan Mendis added 63 for the fourth wicket before Mendis on 25 smashed a drive straight to long-off from the bowling of spinner Xavier Doherty (1-30).

Thisara Perera, who hit two consecutive sixes off Laughlin’s bowling to lead the tourists to victory in Saturday’s game one at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, smashed 35 not out off 15 deliveries including three fours and two sixes on Monday.

Perera’s and Jayawadene’s partnership yielded 59 runs from 28 balls.

Laughlin finished with the untidy figures of 1-40 after his fourth over went for 20 runs, including three consecutive fours from Jayawardene and a remarkable top-edged six from Perera.

Paceman Faulker (1-24) and offspinner Maxwell (1-21) helped keep the brakes on Sri Lanka’s scoring but left-arm quick Mitchell Starc had an off night, conceding 0-35.

Top-ranked Sri Lanka lead the two-match series one-nil.
