Spinner Muirhead earns shock T20 call-up

Legspinner James Muirhead has the chance to press his claims for a spot at this year’s Twenty20 World Cup after earning selection in Australia’s 14-man squad for the three-match T20 series against England, starting in Hobart on January 29.

Muirhead has limited experience on the Australian domestic scene, playing just two first-class matches and four Twenty20 matches.

But with the Australian selectors still weighing up their T20 spin options, Muirhead will be given a chance to impress.

The 20-year-old claimed 4-115 and 2-66 while playing for Cricket Australia’s Invitational XI against England XI in Sydney last November.

Australia’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh will be announced on February 16.

“We are looking at our spin bowling options,” national selector John Inverarity said on Monday.

“Xavier Doherty has strong claims, Brad Hogg still has strong claims, and we are interested in a legspinner also.

“So we are looking at James Muirhead this time.

“He’s a young man and he’s impressed this season when he’s played against England.

“He puts a lot on the ball, and his leg break turns.

“That spin-bowling department is a very important aspect of T20 cricket.”

Cameron White’s strong start to the summer was rewarded with a spot in the T20 side, while Queensland’s Chris Lynn was also selected.

George Bailey, who has been dropped from the Test squad, will remain as skipper of the T20 side, with left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc expected to overcome a back injury in time to take his place in the side.

Twenty20 14-man squad: George Bailey (capt), Aaron Finch, Dan Christian, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ben Cutting, James Faulkner, Josh Hazelwood, Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell, James Muirhead, Chris Lynn, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, Cameron White.
