Long-serving Southern Stars bowler Clea Smith has announced her retirement from cricket, ending 14 years of involvement in the game.
The 33-year-old’s decision brings to a close a career that included both domestic and international highlights.
Smith played 48 one-day internationals for Australia after making her debut against England in 2000, taking 45 wickets at 25.69. She also played a lone Test in 2005.
In 2007, the right-armer made her national debut in the relatively new format of T20 cricket and was a member of the side that won the T20 World Cup in the West Indies in 2010.
As a member of the all-conquering Victorian sides, Smith is one of only three bowlers in the women’s national cricket league to have taken a hat-trick and ranks winning domestic titles as one of her greatest achievements in the game.
She is comfortable with her decision to retire and hopes to continue her association with the sport into the future.
“I have had wonderful experiences through cricket, achieved more than I thought I ever could and it feels like there are now other things in life I want to do,” Smith said.
