Southee, Rutherford in for Black Caps

Pace bowler Tim Southee and opening batsman Hamish Rutherford have been called into the injury-hit New Zealand cricket squad ahead of the second one-day international against England in Napier on Wednesday.

The Black Caps will be without Martin Guptill (hamstring) for at least one game while in-form new ball exponent Mitchell McClenaghan faces a longer period out because of a side strain suffered in the three-wicket win at Hamilton on Sunday.

Both players faced further assessment on Monday.

Southee ends two months away from international cricket. He was in excellent form before injuring his thumb in a domestic match but returned in style last week, taking nine wickets for Northern Districts in a Plunket Shield defeat of Wellington.

Rutherford impressed on international debut for the Black Caps in the 2-1 Twenty20 series loss to England.

Aggressive left-armer McClenaghan took four wickets in England’s innings of 258 at Seddon Park but broke down with two balls left in his spell.

The Aucklander has taken 10 wickets in four ODIs since his debut in South Africa last month and captain Brendon McCullum said he would be missed.

“I’m gutted because Mitch has been a revelation for us this year, he’s done an amazing job,” said McCullum.

“He’s allowed us to attack in areas where we haven’t had that luxury in recent times. It’s incredibly disappointing for him.”

McCullum expected Trent Boult to be promoted to the new ball role in Napier.

Guptill retired hurt with a hamstring strain only to return to the crease and hit the winning runs on Sunday.

He could yet play the third match of the series at Auckland on Saturday and should be fit for the three-Test series starting on March 6.

Guptill (27 not out) and McCullum (69no) steered New Zealand to victory with seven balls to spare.

They combined for 41 runs off 18 balls, with McCullum thankful of a hobbling Guptill’s freedom to strike.

“It meant that I could get off strike and allow him to swing for the boundary, which is what he did.

“We knew that running would be limited for him but he’s still obviously a very clean striker of the ball.

“[He] really showed some fighting qualities.”
