Smith named ODI player of the year

Steve Smith has been named Australian Cricket’s One-Day International player of the year.

Smith pipped Aaron Finch to pick up the first award of the night at the Allan Border Medal ceremony in Sydney on Tuesday.

In what was a memorable 12 months for the 25-year-old in all forms of the game, Smith hit 541 runs at an average of 49.18 in one-day internationals.

He picked up 27 votes, two more than Finch, despite the Australian T20 captain hitting more runs in white ball cricket.

Smith hit two centuries and three fifties in 12 ODIs last year, picking up three man-of-the match honours along the way.

Smith, who enjoyed a breakthrough 2014 with the bat, is also the favourite to take out the Allan Border Medal.
