The Sydney Sixers have suffered a massive batting collapse but at least saved themselves from embarrassment in the Big Bash League grand final rematch against the Perth Scorchers at the SCG.
Sydney finished 9-113 from their 20 overs, but it could have been a lot worse as the defending premiers faced the prospect of being bowled out for the lowest ever total.
Steve O’Keefe, Ian Moran, Brett Lee and Luke Feldman wagged for the Sixers to post 42 runs from the final five overs and save the home side from their earlier predicament of being 5-18 and 6-28.
Last year’s domestic runners-up the Scorchers came into the match anchored to the bottom of the ladder after back-to-back losses.
They are in the box seat to turn things around but must first erase nightmares from four nights ago when they were bowled out for the lowest ever BBL total of 69 against the Melbourne Stars in Perth.
Scorchers’ captain Simon Katich won the toss and decided to put faith in the fact that the chasing team has won every match so far this season.
The Sixers’ almighty collapse comes as the Champions League winners and defending Big Bash premiers shoot for their 13th consecutive Twenty20 victory.
Openers from the Sixers’ last-start win Nic Maddinson (groin injury) and David Warner (Test duty) were replaced by Dan Smith and Moises Henriques.
Skipper Brad Haddin got off the mark with the Sixers’ only boundary from the first 10 overs faced, but also departed softly from the spin of Beer.
Steve Smith, Jeevan Mendis and Dom Thornely were also part of the rot – but two simple dropped catches from Triffitt and Katich helped the Sixers cause.
