Rain washed out the second session on day four of the second cricket Test between New Zealand and England in Wellington, following a fightback from the home side.
Showers arrived soon after the players left the Basin Reserve for lunch, with New Zealand on 2-153 in their second innings after following on.
Intermittent rain kept them off and tea was called at the scheduled time of 3.10pm.
The umpires were to inspect the wicket at 3.30pm, with the potential of playing an extended final session if conditions allow.
England remain in a powerful position after leading by 211 runs on the first innings but a combination of the weather and a pitch showing few signs of breaking up could work against them.
Kane Williamson (51no) and Ross Taylor (36no) had steered New Zealand closer to safety in the morning session although the hosts were still 58 runs short of making England bat again.
Resuming at 1-77, New Zealand added 76 in the morning session for the loss of opener Peter Fulton for 45.
Fulton added four runs to his overnight score before sparring James Anderson to captain Alastair Cook at first slip.
A watchful Williamson added 35 to his overnight score to raise a sixth half-century. He struck seven fours but took particular care against the miserly spin of Monty Panesar, who has figures of 1-40 off 23 overs.
Taylor, dismissed from his first ball in the first innings, was more free, stroking six fours off 70 balls faced.
The pair had put on 72 for the third wicket.
There was little life for the seamers, including Anderson, who now sits on 295 wickets in his 79 Tests.
That leaves him just two behind former spinner Derek Underwood, who is fourth on the all-time England list.
