Scorchers unfazed by Sixers’ pace aces

The combination of Sydney Sixers pace aces Brett Lee and Mitchell Starc would normally strike fear into any opposition batsman in the world.

But former England international Paul Collingwood believes the Perth Scorchers have nothing to fear in Saturday’s Twenty20 Big Bash final at the WACA Ground.

Starc, who was named 12th man for the fourth Test against India in Adelaide, has been given permission to play in the Big Bash final, where he could also be joined by injury-plagued allrounder Shane Watson.

But even if Watson fails in his bid to play, the presence of Lee and Starc represents perhaps the biggest hurdle to the Scorchers’ title bid.

And although the WACA is traditionally a paceman’s paradise, Collingwood said the lack of swing there during the Big Bash should make it easier for the batsmen.

“Coming up against pace, I think you kind of get used to it these days,” Collingwood said on Tuesday.

“The one thing about Starc, he does swing the ball a lot. It’s a different angle as well.

“We’ve seen a lot of Brett Lee. He can swing the ball up front.

“But to be honest, the ball in Perth hasn’t swung too much.

“I think it’s crucial to stick to our game plans rather than worry about the opposition too much.”

Collingwood admitted he was a tad frustrated during the home-and-away rounds of the Big Bash after averaging just 10 with the bat.

But the 35-year-old regained his mojo in last week’s semi-final victory over Melbourne Stars, making the most of his promotion to No.3 in posting a handy 31 off 25 balls.

Collingwood said the morale within the player group was sky high ahead of the decider, and praised the continued emergence of Mitchell Marsh, who was named man of the match in the semi-final win courtesy of an unbeaten 41 and two wickets.

“He’s got all the potential in the world,” Collingwood said.

“He’s a strong hitter of the cricket ball, he bowls with good kilometres an hour and he’s a great fielder as well, so he’s got all bases covered.”
