Sayers leads fightback for Redbacks

South Australia and Victoria suffered massive batting collapses as the pace bowlers feasted on a helpful pitch on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash at the MCG.

Fourth-placed Victoria are 8-104 in their second innings and hold an overall lead of 224 runs at tea after 14 wickets fell in the first two sessions on Tuesday.

Chadd Sayers, a 24-year-old Redbacks seamer in his third first-class game, has taken 4-24 from 16 overs to help spark the visitors.

Rob Quiney (19) and Chris Rogers (36) had given the Bushrangers a solid platform with a 56-run opening stand before Victoria lost 7-28.

Quiney was caught at square leg off the bowling of Sayers and next over Rogers was caught at second slip as Joe Mennie claimed his sixth wicket of the match.

Aaron Finch completed a pair when he was caught at first slip off Carl Tietjens’ bowling and Cameron White was controversially given out lbw for three to Sayers.

Skipper White slapped his thigh in anger as he walked off, indicating the ball had struck him high.

Peter Handscomb (five) and Andrew McDonald (10) were also lbw to Sayers.

Will Sheridan (seven) was stumped in unusual circumstances at 7-84 as Adam Crosthwaite, standing back to paceman Tietjens, brilliantly threw the wicket down.

Peter Siddle was caught behind for seven after sharing an 18-run partnership with Ryan Carters (15 not out). Jayde Herrick is yet to score.

Earlier, medium-pacer McDonald claimed 5-21 off 16 overs as South Australia collapsed for 100 in reply to Victoria’s first innings of 220.

The Redbacks had resumed on 4-81 on Tuesday and the competition’s bottom side lost 6-19.

Victoria’s Test quick Siddle took 3-34.

Seamer Mennie took 5-43 on Monday to continue his fine debut season for South Australia after McDonald (72) and Siddle (41) came together at 7-118 and added 95 for Victoria’s eighth wicket.
