South Australia claimed three quick NSW wickets to take a stranglehold on the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide on Wednesday.
The Blues were 3-43 in their second innings at tea on day two, trailing the Redbacks by 40 runs.
SA earlier banked innings points by making 240 in reply to NSW’s first dig of 157.
Redbacks swing bowling Chadd Sayers then again crashed through the Blues’ top order as the visitors lost three wickets for just two runs.
Sayers, who captured five wickets in NSW’s first innings, added another two by dismissing Scott Henry (five) and Tim Cruickshank (one).
Sayers’ pace partner Joe Mennie chipped in with the scalp of David Dawson (two) as the Blues slumped to 3-12.
Left-hander Nic Maddinson (22 not out) and Peter Nevill (10 not out) survived until the tea break.
Earlier, SA banked innings points thanks to half-centuries by Jake Brown and Tim Ludeman.
Brown (65) and Ludeman (60) put on a 120-run partnership to rescue SA from a perilous 5-51 and take the Redbacks beyond NSW’s first innings.
NSW pacemen Trent Copeland and Doug Bollinger each claimed four wickets but couldn’t prevent SA moving to 20 points on the Shield table – two behind second-placed Queensland and four adrift of competition leaders Victoria.
