SA fight back against Tasmania in Shield

South Australia are mounting a fightback on day two of the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at Bellerive.

The struggling Redbacks took 7-75 to dismiss the Tigers for just 138 on Friday before their batsmen edged the visitors to a 68-run lead at 3-94 in their second innings.

At tea, Travis Head was unbeaten on 37 with Callum Ferguson 25 not out.

SA have a long way to go to gain their first outright points in 19 Shield games, but they last did that at Bellerive in November 2010.

Luke Butterworth (1-22), Jackson Bird (1-27) and James Faulkner (1-18) have a wicket each for Tasmania, while underdone Test paceman Ben Hilfenhaus has bowled nine overs with figures of 0-27.

The big swing bowler did, however, have Head dropped by Ed Cowan at gully when he was 17.

After making just 112 in their first dig, the Redbacks looked in trouble again at 3-31 but a 63-run partnership between Ferguson and Head steadied the ship.

Earlier, South Australian paceman Chadd Sayers finished with 4-29 and Australian one-day allrounder Dan Christian 3-31.

Tasmania had resumed at 3-63 and were 8-135 at lunch before Sayers and Christian mopped up the tail soon after the break.

Tigers recruit Ben Dunk has top scored for the match so far with 45 in the keeper-batsman’s first Shield outing for his new state.

Test spinner Nathan Lyon didn’t bowl a ball in the Tasmanian innings with the green-tinged pitch and cool conditions favouring the seamers.

The Tigers have lost former Test skipper Ricky Ponting for the remainder of the match with hamstring soreness.

He has been replaced by Steve Cazzulino.
