SA down Vics by one wicket in Shield

An ice-cool knock by Tim Ludeman steered South Australia to a tense one-wicket triumph against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide on Sunday.

Chasing 189 to win, the Redbacks reached 9-191 with Ludeman top-scoring with 49.

SA banked consecutive Shield wins for the first time since February-March 2009 by winning their first four-day match at home since October 2009.

However, Victoria still climbed to the top of the ladder after they claimed first-innings points to move to 22 points, two ahead of Queensland.

The Redbacks, who also beat Victoria in the last Shield match last November, went to 16 points – equal with third-placed Tasmania.

But the Redbacks went through some tense times to achieve the triumph, with Ludeman combining with 19-year-old Travis Head (35) in a decisive partnership.

The pair were united with SA wobbling at 5-82 following the rapid losses of Phil Hughes (35), Callum Ferguson (18) and captain Johan Botha (golden duck).

Ludeman and Head put on 47 runs for the sixth wicket, their stand broken when Head was run out, before Ludeman combined with Joe Mennie (17) for a handy 35-run partnership.

But SA still needed 25 runs with three wickets in hand when Sam Raphael returned to the crease.

Raphael, an opening batsman, was concussed and retired hurt with his score on 11 on Saturday when struck in the head by a James Pattinson bouncer.

The fourth-gamer lost Ludeman, who was dismissed by Scott Boland (3-30) five runs short of the target.

SA tailender Chadd Sayers was then bowled by David Hussey with the Redbacks two runs shy of a win.

But Raphael slashed a cut shot to the boundary off Boland’s next over to finish 27 not out and seal victory.
