S Lanka out for 318 in 1st Test v England

James Anderson took five wickets to help England end Sri Lanka’s first innings at 318 on Tuesday in the first cricket Test.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene hit a superb 180 and was the last Sri Lankan batsman to be dismissed on day two of the match.

His innings included 22 fours and three sixes and helped Sri Lanka to a competitive total after they had plunged to 3-15 on the first day.

Sri Lanka resumed on Tuesday at 8-289 and Anderson bowled tailender Chanaka Welegedara for 19 to end a frustrating ninth-wicket partnership of 54 runs.

He later had Jayawardene caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

It was Anderson’s 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

He started strongly on Monday, taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries in the third over of the match.

His victims included key batsmen Lahiru Thirimanne (3), Kumar Sangakkara (0) and Prasanna Jayawardene (23) besides the Sri Lankan captain.

Jayawardene’s century was the 30th in his Test career and 13th score of more than 150.
