S African bowlers have eyes on newcomers

South Africa’s fearsome pace attack has wasted little time in devising a plan for the two New Zealand batsmen drafted into the squad to beef up their brittle batting line-up for the third Test in Wellington.

No sooner had Dean Brownlie and Daniel Flynn been named in the Black Caps squad for the Test starting on Friday than the Proteas went to work on finding their weaknesses, and paceman Morne Morkel is confident of continuing their success in the series which they lead 1-0.

“We’ve definitely got our plans set for the guys coming in.

“I think our preparation for the New Zealand batting has been brilliant.

“I think one thing that we’ve done really well this series is executing our plans,” the 27-year-old told reporters.

In Hamilton they enticed Brendon McCullum to fall into the trap of pulling a short ball to square leg in the first innings and in their second turn at bat had Martin Guptill caught at short mid-wicket.

While coming up with plans for certain batsmen involves analysing footage, nothing beats experience when it comes to coping with the infamous wind at the Basin Reserve.

Morkel is willing to do his bit for the team working into the breeze and says the experience of basing themselves in Wellington early on in their tour ensured they sampled what the capital can throw at them.

“We had a bit of a taste of the wind and conditions. We’re looking forward to that experience and challenge. We just have to deal with it on the day and make it work as best as possible.”

Morkel has only four wickets in the series but is far from disappointed with his return as long as the team is winning.

“Unfortunately I have not picked up a bag full of wickets, but the job I’ve done as first change bowler, keeping the pressure on, I’m quite happy with what I’ve done.”
